36 mph over the speed limit... a few questions?
Today I was pulled over for going 86 mph in a 50 mph zone. I live in Florida and here 30 mph over the speed limit and over requires a court appearance. I'm 18 and I've had my license for a little over 3 months though I first had my permit issued about two years ago. I'm going to tell my dad about it tonight and I'm pretty sure that (after he throws a fit) he'll hire a good lawyer. But still, I'm so afraid that I'll lose my license. I'm going to be living alone in a few months and I really can't do anything without the ability to drive. I also realize that I might have to do driving school, which I wouldn't mind as much. Any idea on what's going to happen to me? Any advice? The court date has not been set yet.

- You will lose you license for a MINIMUN of 12 months You will pay a HUGE fine YOu may very well get 30-90 days jail You will get a lot of community service STAY OF THE ROAD. YOU ARE A DANGEROUS KILLER.
- You will likely get a 1 month suspension at most. If your dad gets you a lawyer, you may get off with just having to take the driving class. Good Luck! The following is what I found on the Florida highway safety site. "If you receive 6 points on your driving record within a 12 month period, your driving privileges are automatically restricted to business purposes only for 12 months or until you are 18, whichever happens first. If you receive additional points during this restricted period, the restriction is extended 90 days for each additional point." "More than 15 mph over the speed limit = 4 points" P.S.- Slow the hell down, it is way better to be late for wherever you are going.
- If this is your first, and they offer driving school, take it! You'll have court fines and costs and if you have a lawyer, the judge may reduce the ticket to a non-points violation upon completion of driving school. I hope you learned your lesson though. The next time won't be as "easy".
- Don't be stupid. You broke the law and you knew what you were doing. Getting a lawyer would just be a waste of time and money. Just plead guilty and be done with it. If you fight it and lose you'll be worse off than if you just pleaded guilty.
- Do the school. Go to court. Dress up nice. Have a courteous and humble impression. Go in front of the judge and plea for his mercy. Say to him or her that you made a mistake and you took the class. Tell the judge you won't make a mistake again. Hopefully the judge show some mercy and tell you to pay the fine and be sure not to do it again..
- Buy good walking shoes.
- I can not answer for Florida laws specifically But in a few other states you would be looking at just a fine and probation. 20 years ago I got a ticket for going triple the posted limit and all I got was a fine. Bottom line do not antagonize the judge and honestly sit down and think about how stupid what you did was. That kind of driving is like playing Russian roulette and I have the dead friends to prove it.
- Being nice to your dad, and getting a good lawyer who specializes in such cases should get you off. Just like in all areas, being well heeled gives you a break. Good Luck.
