Girls never respond to my messages on this Online Dating Website... advice.?

I'm into trying new things... who knew online dating can be so addictive... Well for some info on the problem... I'm not ugly. I don't say what I don't mean and I do try to say a joke here and there but for some reason girls still don't respond... I tried commenting on something that caught my eye in their profile but still didn't work. What am I missing that they don't message me back? My pictures are also pretty good. And is it okay to message alot of different girls at once or should I message one girl at a time and wait for an answer before messaging someone else? And are there any girls who will recieve a message their planning on responding too but wait just to not seem too eager or desperate and instead respond a few days or a week later? What are the "hidden" rules to this online dating stuff. I know there are these things you shouldn't do and things you should do that's just known among experienced online daters :-P lol... i might be off but... Advice anyone? It's a free online dating website and i'm not asking for the usual, "Stop it, it's wrong." Just for some advice please.

6. Having met my sweetheart on the net, I believe women or men like to meet by destiny or by fortuitous chance. You might be trying too hard. I was looking and looking and when I finally gave up, that's when I met the girl of my dreams. Oh yeah, if you finally do meet someone on the net, regular phone calls are your life line but spontanaeity and quick witty humor is more important. Fortunately though, if you are compatible, it's a lot easier to do that. Good luck.
7. Never stop at one. I'm not saying to be an internet pimp, but you should keep your options open.
8. The first thing the girls look at is your photo. No photo pretty much guarantees that you wont get any responses. Make sure you have several good photos with the best one as main. Don't use any old photos or photos where there is too much skin. Next, they read your profile. If you don't get a response, then that is probably where you are going wrong. If you are using http://www.okcupid.com because its totally free then you know your lack of responses isn't because the other person didn't pay. Oh yeah, just fire off as many emails as you can. Make them brief, but include enough info that they know you read their profile. Also, if your on okcupid.com, then make sure you answer at least 100 of their psych questions or else nobody will take you seriously.
