1. he never loved you. there are one million signs there that he never loved you and was trying hard to end the relationship. sounds like you have been super clingy and that you smothered him. why would you want to be with someone who doesn't want you? let it go. move on. also, it sounds like a really immature relationship. sounds like most of your communication is via messaging? that's just ridiculous. real couples talk in person. really. get over it. you're probably annoying him.
2. I think he called you to see how you were doing... because he still cares about you. He told you that he was only using you for lust because he wants you to get over him and move on. It is a very common method used these days. You tell someone that you were just using them so they'll move on and find someone new. To sum it all up: Just give him some space and take it from there.
